A central air conditioner makes cold and distributes it through your existing ducts. It is a simple, proven machine, and cheaper to buy than a heat pump of equivalent capacity.
It also sits idle eight months of the year.
We install both, and we have no stake in steering you either way. But there is a line of reasoning that comes up at every evaluation, and it is worth stating plainly:
A heat pump is an air conditioner. The price difference between the two is real, but it has to be weighed against three things: the rebates a heat pump qualifies for and an air conditioner does not, the savings on your autumn and spring heating, and the fact that one machine replaces two pieces of equipment you would otherwise replace later.
In some cases the net gap is thin — occasionally it favours the heat pump. In others the air conditioner is the right answer: a home recently converted to natural gas, a tight budget, or a heating system still young enough that there is no reason to touch it.
We give you both numbers. The decision is yours.
An oversized air conditioner is a bad air conditioner. It cools the air too quickly, stops before it has pulled out the moisture, and leaves you in a cold clammy house — then restarts a few minutes later. Those short cycles wear out the compressor.
The right unit is the one that runs long and slow.

An air conditioner only cools. A heat pump does the same thing, plus heating for a good part of the year. The purchase-price gap is real, but the heat pump qualifies for rebates the air conditioner does not, and it lowers your heating bill. If you are replacing equipment anyway, get both prices before you decide.
North American regulation is phasing out R-410A in favour of lower-impact refrigerants, R-454B among them. New equipment ships with it. An existing R-410A system does not need replacing because of this — it keeps being serviced normally, though the refrigerant will get more expensive over the years.
Noise that appears or grows is never normal. It can be an unbalanced fan, a vibrating mount, or a compressor in trouble. A recent, well-installed unit is barely noticeable from a neighbour's patio. Have it checked before the problem costs you the compressor.
Usually because the unit is oversized. It hits the set temperature so fast that it shuts off before it has dehumidified the air. It is the most common sizing mistake, and no thermostat setting fixes it.
