An electric heat pump that carries most of the season, and a gas furnace that takes over in deep cold. You keep the power of gas for the days it actually matters.
Two energy sources, one automatic decision
A dual-energy system pairs an electric central heat pump with a natural gas furnace, both driven by the same control.
Through autumn, mild winter and spring, the heat pump does the work. It moves heat rather than making it, which is why it delivers two to three times more heat than the electricity it consumes.
When the temperature drops below the balance point, the control hands over to the gas furnace. Gas does not falter in deep cold: at −30 °C the house heats exactly as it always did.
You touch nothing. The thermostat reads the outdoor temperature and chooses.

Your ductwork is already there. A gas-heated house already has the full distribution system. The central heat pump connects straight into it — nothing to open up, nothing to rebuild.
You keep the power of gas for the days that need it. This is the main difference from a full conversion to electricity: no electric backup heat running at the expensive rate through a cold snap, and no question about whether the house will hold at −30 °C.
One more unit gets you air conditioning. If your air conditioner is also nearing the end of its life, the heat pump replaces it along the way.
The electrical load stays modest. This point is underrated. An all-electric conversion often requires a panel upgrade, because the backup heat has to be capable of heating the whole house on its own. In a dual-energy system the gas furnace plays that role — the electrical demand stays far lower, and plenty of homes manage without touching their service at all.
What we check in your home
1. The existing gas furnace
Its age, condition and efficiency. A recent furnace in good shape stays. One over fifteen years old gets replaced at the same time — otherwise you are pairing a new heat pump with something that will fail before it does.
2. The ductwork
An undersized duct system throttles a heat pump. The airflow a heat pump needs is not the same as what a furnace needs, and it is one of the most common reasons an installation disappoints.
3. The electrical panel
Less critical than in an all-electric conversion, but you still need capacity for the heat pump. Our licensed electrician handles that check as part of the project.
4. Where the outdoor unit goes
Clearances, mounting, refrigerant line length, distance from bedroom windows.
When dual energy is not the right answer
We will tell you:
- You have no natural gas. Without a connection the question does not arise — it is a heat pump with electric backup.
- You want off gas entirely. That is a legitimate goal, and dual energy does not achieve it. It reduces your gas consumption without eliminating it.
- Your gas furnace is new and you do not want air conditioning. There is not much to gain right now.

What exactly is a dual-energy system?
Two appliances, one system. An electric central heat pump handles the heating for as long as the outdoor temperature allows — which is most of the season. When it gets too cold for the heat pump to stay efficient, the control switches automatically to the natural gas furnace. You do nothing: the changeover is managed by the thermostat based on outdoor temperature.
Do I need to already have a gas furnace?
That is the most common starting point: a home already heated by gas, with a central heat pump added onto the existing ductwork. If your furnace is still in good condition it can often stay and become the backup stage. If it is near the end of its life, we replace both at once.
Does it provide air conditioning too?
Yes. A heat pump is an air conditioner that can run its cycle in reverse. A dual-energy system therefore gives you both heating and cooling, with no additional equipment.
At what temperature does it switch over?
That is called the balance point, and it is adjustable. It depends on the heat pump's capacity, your home's heat load, and the relationship between electricity and gas costs. We set it at commissioning and explain how it was chosen.
Does it qualify for rebates?
That depends on the program and the equipment installed, and the rules change from year to year. We confirm your eligibility during the free evaluation rather than quoting you a figure that might not hold.
