Filtration, air exchange, humidification and UV treatment. In a well-sealed house, this is often what is missing before comfort actually arrives.

Comfort is not only about temperature

A house can sit at 21 °C and still be uncomfortable. The air is dry and static in January, cooking smells linger, allergies get worse in winter — precisely when you are spending more time indoors.

None of that is fixed at the thermostat. It is fixed by changing what moves through the ducts.

The four levers

Filtration. A filter catches dust, pollen and pet dander. The trap is assuming denser is better: an over-restrictive filter chokes airflow and makes the blower work for nothing. A large-surface filter cabinet mounted on the return gives far better filtration without hurting the system.

Air exchange. Recent homes, and older ones that have been properly insulated and sealed, no longer breathe through their leaks. A heat recovery ventilator (HRV) brings fresh air in and pushes stale air out, recovering the heat as it goes. Without one, moisture builds up.

Humidification. Outdoor air at −15 °C holds almost no water vapour. Heated to 21 °C it becomes extremely dry — hence the scratchy throat, the static shocks and the hardwood floors that open up at the seams. A whole-house humidifier plumbed into the system corrects it.

UV treatment. A UV lamp aimed at the evaporator coil prevents mould from establishing itself where moisture is permanent. It is a narrow use, and an effective one.

Not every air-quality accessory earns its keep, and some sell considerably better than they work. At the evaluation we start from what you actually notice in your home — dryness, dust, odours, condensation on the windows — and recommend what addresses that. Not the whole catalogue.

Frequently asked questions

Is a better filter enough?

Not always, and too dense a filter can actively hurt. Past a certain point a filter restricts airflow, which makes the blower strain and reduces system performance. The right approach is a high-efficiency filter matched to your equipment with enough surface area — not the densest one on the hardware-store shelf.

My house is too dry in winter. What can I do?

Cold air holds very little moisture; heat it up and you get very dry air. A humidifier plumbed into the system solves this house-wide, unlike a portable unit that treats one room. The target is 30% to 45% — go higher and you get condensation on windows and moisture migrating into walls.

What does an air exchanger do?

A modern house is airtight, deliberately, for energy efficiency. But an airtight house accumulates humidity, odours and CO₂. An air exchanger (HRV) brings in fresh air and expels stale air while recovering the heat on the way through. In recent construction it is not a luxury.

Are UV lamps worth it?

They have a real but specific job: mounted at the evaporator coil, they stop mould from establishing itself where it is permanently damp and dark. That is a concrete maintenance benefit. Be sceptical of broader claims about purifying the air you breathe.
